I have been teasing this release on Social Media for a while, including the trailer for the Captain Marvel movies and indicating that news was on the way about the upcoming toy release. Marvel Studios very much likes to keep spoilers and secrets close so that viewers and fans can enjoy the movies. We often see with the toys that the figures to be included in a set are teased but not officially revealed so as to avoid giving away spoilers. But, with the latest trailer out, the breakdown of Action Figures has been revealed and we can finally write a preview for it.
Marvel Legends Captain Marvel Wave 1 is scheduled for release in March 2019 to coincide with the launch of the movies. Like other movie releases, we often get our toys in stock prior to the movie so that our customers can have them for when the movie comes out. However, there are restrictions in place so we cannot list it for pre-order until permission is provided by Hasbro. So check back for news updates and announcements of when this set is ready to be pre-ordered.
Without further ado, let’s see what this release has to offer, starting with not one, but two variants of Captain Marvel with Brie Larson’s movie likeness. One has her in a Bomber jacket along with her kitty, “Goose the Cat.” The other has her in her Captain Marvel costume without the jacket and has interchangeable heads to her with her mask on or without. Both figures look spot-on, and another great job by Hasbro with the Marvel Legends movie line.
Captain Marvel (or Ms. Marvel, or Warbird, or Binary) has been a great character in the comics. She’s had her fair share of trials she has had to overcome (like Rogue of the X-Men, who at the time was a member of the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants, stealing her powers and memories and leaving her a blank slate!). I personally wish that the Fox deal had been completed sooner so that Captain Marvel and Rogue could have an intertwined origin story in the MCU, but that doesn’t appear to be the case (though if the previews tell me anything, its that she looks like she has some memory issues…. so simulating what happened with Rogue but in an entirely different way). Regardless, especially as the “Daddy” in the “Daughter and Daddy” portion of the ACB Toys & Collectibles design, I am really enjoying seeing the strong female characters in the movies. Black Widow, Wasp, Scarlet Witch, and now Captain Marvel gets to take center stage as the first female lead in a Marvel movie – and certainly a great character to get that honor, as she has been a leader of the Avengers and much more over the years. This is one movie (and toy release), both my daughter and I are quite excited about.
Sticking with Goose the Cat, next up is the young Nick Fury, along with a…. is Goose the Cat a prisoner? Since Captain Marvel is expanding upon the extra terrestrial storyline started with Guardians of the Galaxy, and her main enemies in the movie (at least apparently from the trailers) are the shape-shifting Skrulls, it’ll be interesting to see if Goose all bound up is because he’s a Skrull or some other kind of alien. We’ll see in March!
Speaking of Skrulls, only one made it into this wave…. Talos. I’ll be surprised if we don’t see a second Captain Marvel wave around the time the DVD / Blu-Ray hits with additional Skrulls and some other characters from the movie that are being protected right now to prevent spoilers. But for this wave, there is Talos.
The Skrulls fight the Kree, which Captain Marvel references in the trailer. We also see that she has what looks like a team that works with her, including some familiar faces from the Guardians of the Galaxy! But allies in this wave includes Genis-Vell (whether he is in the movie or is based solely on his comic design remains to be seen) and Star Force Commander (I’ll be curious to see if he comes with an alternate head and is Jude Law, or Mar-Vell, or, if he will be part of the presumed 2nd Wave).
The last action figure in this set is Gray Gargoyle, who looks exactly like he does in my older comics. I assume that he is comic-inspired and this is not a reveal of an unanticipated character who will be in the movie. Kind of an obscure pick in my opinion (plenty of cosmic characters that could have found their way into this wave instead), but I easily recognized him, so that’s not a bad start.
This 7-figure set has parts to put together the Kree Sentry as the Build-a-Figure. I’ll be curious to see if the Kree Sentry is in the movie, and what kind of role it plays.
Of course some details may still change between now and the official release, but it sounds like this is the mix we’re looking at. Which figure in the Captain Marvel Wave 1 release are you the most excited for? As mentioned above, with previews such as this, we have ordered our copies for sale, but until they are officially announced for sale by Hasbro or we have our advanced copies in hand, we will not be able to list them in our shop. So check back to see when pre-orders can be accepted. The release is targeted for March 2019, so we should get the approval to get them up for sale likely in January or February!
